If you own a library card at a participating library or are a student at a participating university, you may be able to stream movies for free at the video streaming site, Kanopy!
I know, I know. You are rolling your eyes. Ugh. Public library. College. It’s probably going to have some really lame, obscure, dry, boring stuff, right? Nope. As of right now, Kanopy is hosting some of the best movies you could ever ask for from cinema’s greatest directors, including Rashomon, Erasherhead, Breathless, The Seventh Seal, The Great Dictator, Solaris and much much more.
So if you’ve always been holding off on catching some classic movies but have been putting them off forever, now’s your chance. All you have to do is sign up at the site with a registered library card or your college username and password, and you’re good to go. You can then watch up to six movies a month on a tablet or desktop PC, or stream via Roku, Apple TV or Chromecast.
Right now, it seems as if Kanopy is available in a few markets but I’m sure that if the service becomes successful enough, it’ll expand. If you want to know whether it’s available in your area, simply do a search at the site of either your college or library, and it should turn up. If it doesn’t turn up, just drop the folks at Kanopy a line.
